What is Delta 9 THC?

Delta 9 THC is a compound found naturally in the cannabis species (hemp and marijuana) or simply a “cannabinoid.” It consists of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. Some scientists theorize that THC offers plants protection against ultraviolet radiation (like a “cannabis sunblock”). Because of its structure, it can interact with a network in the human body called the “endocannabinoid system.” For many, this interaction produces desirable and enjoyable effects.

In the United States and UK, the Delta 9-THC concentration on a dry weight basis separates hemp and marijuana. Hemp, which Congress legalized through the 2018 Farm Bill, is cannabis with a 0.3% or less concentration of Delta 9 THC on a dry weight basis. Marijuana is cannabis with any concentration higher than this.

Delta 9 is the most widely-known form of THC. Most of the time, you hear or read the word “THC,” it’s usually in reference to Delta 9.
